The one game I rejected the gambit (accidentally...) ended very quickly. :)

Re: Official Thread: Evans Gambit MOT
Why was Blue blue, well I'll tell you
He made a bad mistake.

He did not take that ole b pawn
Instead, retreat did make

Soon after, then, he had no win
And had to fold his King

You always know, in these games though
Defeat ole Glad does bring

If you take, or decline make
"Resign" you'll quite soon sing

So do not worry 'bout that pawn
That you did not accept it

This end result did not occur here
Just because he kept it!

Re: Official Thread: Evans Gambit MOT
The research I did before the MOT said to avoid 5 Bd6 but I lost to it each time it was played. Granted it was against much stronger players

Re: Official Thread: Evans Gambit MOT
According to Chessgames.com the stats break down this way:

(GM, IM, or IGM dating back to 1900)

356 games 5. ... Bc5 is bad for black. White wins 66.2 - 27.8%.
43 games 5. ... Bd6 is best for black. Black wins 41.9 - 37.2%.

The problem with this line is that the moves:

3. ... Bc5 and
4. ... BxB4 are weak.

Better are:

3. ... Nf6
4. ... Bb6

So 5. ... Bd6 turns out to be the best black can do with a not so good position...

And 6. 0-0 is a good alternative to 6. d4.

Good game Wiz! Both Wiz and another player played the exact same game against me until move 18. I resigned this one at move 22 due to, uh, the challenging amount of material that I was about to be left with. Interesting to see how the other one will end (it's not looking so good right now).

Re: Official Thread: Evans Gambit MOT
Wiz makes an interesting point about a player being able to assure himself of an even score in a double round-robin event, but exactly the same thing can be done in one of the Caissa Correspondence Tournaments.Let's say you are the lowest ranking player of the 5-player group, andwant an even score so you will be certain of gaining rating points. Youjust wait for your two opponents who have White to make their moves, then make these moves in the two games in which you have White. Thenyou wait for these two players to make their moves as Black, and you then make these moves in the two games in which you have Black. Ineffect, your two opponents who have White are playing your two opponents who have Black.

Is it ethical? I don't know. Is it honorable? I don't know. But, is it legal? To that question the answer is a resounding YES!
