Sign up for Nova 2015 and Spanish MOT to support Spud's Recovery
Dear Members:
Please consider signing up for one or both tournaments to support Spud. Many of you know and remember him. He is fighting for his life. Spud has done more than any member I know of to greet guests and create new members and to of course make us laugh with his quips and chats and of course to challenge us in the game of Chess. Don't do this for me or Gladiator or Wizard or for Caissa. Do it to show Spud that we care and wish him well in his recovery and hope he will also come back very soon. Do this for yourself. You are a member and it is time to rise up and unite and support one of our own.
Thanks for your attention. Post to Gladiator by 8/30/15 or Wizard or send me your sign up and I will forward it. Let our united entries be the evidence of the best greeting card Spud ever got.
Joe

Re: Sign up for Nova 2015 and Spanish MOT to support Spud's Recovery
Hi Pazuzu:
I don't know all of the details and since I did not clear this totally with him before he left the board today I'll wait till I get the okay from him before I give an update. As you probably remember, Spud told us he had skin cancer and had to have an operation. He came through that okay but later he had cancer in one of his eyes. Now he is fighting off something similar again. Do keep the good thoughts going and encourage others to sign up. Spud's birthday is coming up at the end of November and he'll be 54. I would like to see him supercede that one for sure with more to come. Stay tuned.

I was thinking along those good ideas earlier today and I'm sure Gladiator would not mind changing it. In fact we could create an annual tournament in his honor to be played each Fall Season with a different setup picked by the organizer or membership. What do you think?

Pazuzu and Other Members:

I just got through to Spud by e-mail and I asked him if I could cut and paste and share his exact words and he said yes please do so:

Hi Joe

I’m really touched. Thank you very much for your concern. I’m happy for you to share this, if for no other reason than to serve a reminder for people to be vigilant about Melanoma. When I turned 50 three years ago I thought I should get a “tune-up” so I went to my GP. For as long as I can remember, I had had a large mole which had never given me any cause for concern, but as I was already in his office, I asked him to check it out. Turns out it had recently turned malignant so I had it taken off. Fast-forward to the beginning of this year and my glasses broke. The optometrist noticed something dodgy in my eye which turned out to be an Ocular Melanoma which I got treated with a radioactive plaque. Had my 6 month post-op scans a month or so ago which picked up a "hot spot" in my lymph nodes so I've now had all the nodes on my right hand side and, while we will know for certain when the biopsy comes in, it's highly likely that it was spread from the earlier skin Melanoma. The only potential upside is that my oncologist now thinks that I might qualify for some clinical trials which I didn't before. It's ironic, I had been so worried about the Ocular Melanoma spreading to my liver or lungs which it does in a 50% of the case and is very, very difficult to treat, I had totally forgotten about the earlier one. I'm still a bit sore from the surgery but will go back to work and see how it goes. From now on, it will be a matter of living from scan to scan. I have put my trust in my Doctors and will hope for the best while planning for the worst.

Regards

Stuart

Trusting in Doctors isn't the worst, it's trusting in priests that is the worst.

Re: Sign up for Nova 2015 and Spanish MOT to support Spud's Recovery
Spud old friend, sorry to hear about the melanoma. Lost an uncle to skin cancer and the resulting mestasis a number of years back. Been visiting a dermatologist yearly ever since. God bless you and I'll pray for your recovery. Hope the oncologists and the good Lord can intercede on your behalf. I need you back here (;>)

I hope many members will will sign up to show their support. For myself, I would love to play in both tournaments, but I am being overengaged in other aspects of life. You know what they say about life, it's what takes over while you're making other plans.

Can't Play but I can Pray.

God bless you all.

Thanks for sharing your views. I personally have challenged and told off both doctors and priests in my lifetime and I am a believer, but when it comes to fighting cancer and supporting a friend all supporters are welcome. Spud's doctors have helped him so let us hope they continue that good fight.

Thanks Tom for sharing your thoughts and good luck with your current life challenges. I have been battling more than a few of my own of late, but no matter cause I am all in for Spud. I look forward to our future games and hope that you are available for future tournaments when announced. Besides, I owe you a little pay back ha, ha, ha.
I suspect that it will take a lot of effort on my part to change my foolish ways on the chess board, but then again I don't play the game for the same reasons that others do. I have been known to make bad moves intentionally to see what I could do or what I could learn and I told this years ago to that loud mouth chess bully WWJD and it totally blew him away. I have been also testing out a theory from the very beginning about how a player who does not castle can still possibly win a game, and thus far my record proves that point.

Hi Spud: I am so sorry you are having a tough time but I can assure you that you are not alone in your fight. Don't get too down that you can't get back up. Lots of thoughts and prayers are headed your way.

God Bless and keep fighting the good fight.

Hang in there, Spud, and keep fighting, just as you always do over-the-board! You have a massive number of friends here who are praying, pulling, and pushing for you!

Re: Sign up for Nova 2015 and Spanish MOT to support Spud's Recovery
As far as I can tell Spud is recovering from a medical procedure he had done about 3 weeks ago from his report that I previously posted. I don't have any updates except to share the dialogue I had with him in one of our games.

JJStack [4]: check the bulletin board for info on tourney play posted by Gladiator and Wiz if you are interested.
HonestAbe [5]: Can't play as a guest unfortunately .....got limits on the games I can have
JJStack [5]: I know. I just thought you might consider coming back. albell is still around and Gladiator has returned..you could bring a lot of life back to this place.
HonestAbe [6]: I have been considering rejoining but I'm dealing with a reoccurance of the a Melanoma at the moment and I don't have time for a lot of games.
JJStack [6]: Stuart, I am very sorry to hear that and I will hope and pray for your safe and full recovery.
JJStack [8]: any word on your test results yet?
HonestAbe [9]: Not yet....I see my new oncologist on Friday
JJStack [9]: sounds good. Man you got a lot of support for you my friend and I had no idea how these men felt. I am going to share that we you soon. I have already share some.
HonestAbe [11]: Looks like it's now a matter of wait and see....if and when the tumours get big enough to treat I'll be eligible for one of the new medications so I happy that we've got a plan
JJStack [11]: are the tumors internal to your lymph nodes in your neck?
HonestAbe [12]: No....they were ones under my armpit
JJStack [13]: Did they do a scan or biopsy under your arm?
HonestAbe [14]: Yup. Then they take them all out and see which ones had cancer in them. In my case it was 2 out of 16
