Reply | 23 Jun 2011, 18:51:40   Anyone up for the Benko-Volga? And, official rules The last Corr Tourney is nearly over, and winner(s) have already played, and there are just one or two games left. As no one else has stepped up, I thought I'd start the next Corr Tourney, and I thought the Benko-Volga looked interesting. 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 Current list of suckers: Grim Kingsfull Spud WizardNo1 TrencherKnight Blue thornydevil jaume1959 kastelka DualSpace power Registration is open until 30 June 2011. Games will start 1 July 2011. Based on the number of participants, there *may* be two pools. If so, I will split them based on rankings, but haven't decided yet just how that split will occur. This will be a standard (for us) two-games per opponent pair setup, meaning each player will play his opponent twice, once as white and once as black. Each player will send a challenge, as white, to his opponent, for a correspondence game. Time controls for the games shall be set to 15 moves over 15 days. It is the responsibility of the player assuming the white pieces to initiate a challenge. (If one of your opponents sends you two challenges, one as white and one as black, prior to you sending your own challenge, that is okay.) It is the responsibility of the victor to post the results. I will start a new thread prior to the tourney's initiation for that purpose. I would be neat, but is not required, for players to import their games into the thread. I might make a separate thread just for that, much like Spud created separate threads for the Pirc teams. Grim Edited on 1 Jul 2011 at 03:14:58 |

I will speed up the games to be 15/15. This doesn't make the games *that* much faster, for folks who prefer to take more time or have inconsistent network connections, but it will ensure people are moving fairly regularly. And those of us over 40 can certainly appreciate the benefit of regular movements ... ;) |

I once saw a film, about a trip up the river Volga by cruise ship. The captain went into the ladies quarters and asked; anyone up for the bonko volga? From memory, there wasn't much chess in it.

And, official rules This tourament prompted me to go back and look over some of my old copies of Chess Life, as I knew I had organized and directed a USCF-Rated Restricted Move Benko Event in the 60's, 70's or 80's. I was organizing a lot of USCF Restricted Move Events back then, and all appeared in the Tournament Life section of Chess Life. Maybe these events richly deserve to remain unmentioned, LOL, but here are some of them anyway: Benko Billy Lassie Come Home (Colle System) Close Encounters Of The Bird Kind Two Knights In Another Town Gone With The Winawer The Empire Spikes Back George's Geronimo (King's Indian) Elizabeth's Pocahontas (Queen's Indian) Edited on 4 Jul 2011 at 16:44:20 |

Reply | 7 Jul 2011, 05:16:16 In reply to Grim Re: Anyone up for the Benko-Volga? And, official rules The basic thrust of the Benko, by Black, if White accepts the b-pawn, is to generate the exchange of the light-squared Bishops on f1, thus preventing Castling and hindering White's development, then mounting an attack on the a and b files. If this is not accomplished, or at least attempted, the Benko seems purposeless and the pawn squandered for nothing. Wiz |
