Re: The Monkey's Bum Deferred: 1st August
That is the level of play I expect from all participants in this Tournament....Judit asked if she could enter, but I told her "no"..she just won't be able to maintain the standard required

Can you update the entry list? The last one I saw was on July 3 when there were 7 entrants.

The Monkey's Bum was discovered and championed by IM Nigel Povah in the 1970s during a wave of popularity for the Modern Defence.
And yet this may not be completely true. At the Tanami open at Rabbit's flat , this opening was used in the 1960's by Gazza, who remarked to Bazza, if this works I'll bonk my emus. It will be immediately obvious that monkey's bum is just a rip off, thinly disguised by virtue of an anagram. Further weight to the truth of this tale is that very few , if any emus are to be found in the Tanami region.

Re: The Monkey's Bum Deferred: 1st August
One of the reasons I just renewed with Caissa was for comments like pennine's and a chance to explore the Monkey's bum.

Living in Arizona, I don't get exposed to much chess. My state would rather focus on silly laws like SB 1070.

Re: The Monkey's Bum Deferred: 1st August
Dear all

A suggestion has been made which I reckon has some merit.

As I have posted previously,I intend to split this Tourny in groups instead of one large group as many have commented on the difficulty of maintaining too many games.

But instead of creating groups of similar rated players as has been the practice in the past...what do you think about randomising them in some way so that each group has a mix of stronger and not-so-strong players?

A mix sounds ok. I'll play regardless (as long as there's no entry fee)

Re: The Monkey's Bum Deferred: 1st August
These ratings are arbitrary. Look at past results and the lower-rated player wins a good % of time...Mix it up.

Or

Have two mixed groups with a SWISS format and the top half of each group move onto a final group with round robin format...Spud said he didn't know how to run a swiss and I said it is fairly simple. Maybe one of you could define the process. The Swiss would reduce the number of games to be played.

 I agree with that.
It seems to me that there are 4 strong players, then most of us , who are not so strong. And then there's Spud. So, it seems to me that a random selection could be the way to go. Either way the strong players will be up against the weaker players. I think I can speak on behalf of the not so strong group, and say that we enjoy the chance to play with the strong players.
PS, Spud easily beat me in our last game.

I don't understand how a swiss would work in correspondence. It might take several years to play 1 tournament unless you have some sort of modification in thought?

Re: The Monkey's Bum Deferred: 1st August
Now then, Spud. Up until logging on this morning , I did not care which group I was in. Now I demand to be in Doorman's group. And when he has lost, to me , he must be stripped of any other points that he might have fortuitously won...up to that point, and any that he might win after that point.
By the way, there are two new rules
1. Do not show Doorman any leniency or sympathy as I did in our last game, which I foolishly let him win.
2. Kingsful is not allowed to finish DFL. You must do all you can to get Doorman to knock Kingsful off his perch.

can you please stop filling my inbox with requests to know who the other 3 are, besides yourself.
Good luck, you will need it . Pennine.
