Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
we need to perhaps think about breaking these things up into smaller events with less games.Perhaps with 20 contestants break it up into 3 sections (by rating) so that everyone is playing maybe 12ish games at once versus 40ish.

Going thru the games that have been shown and in a lot of my own games there are very elemental blunders being made because I think players are overwhelmed by the amount of games they are playing.I think the quality of play would be greatly enhanced with less games.

I'd be very interested in what other players think about this idea.IMHO the objective in a thematic is to explore an opening-to think about its strategic ideas to research what has been played by others and to hopefully use this research and thinking to leisurely play some intersting chess.

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
I got so overwhelmed by all the games in the last MOT , that I did not have enough mental energy to put into them. I could not bring myself to move just for the sake of moving. In the end I lost most of my games on time forfeit. I am keeping on top of things in this MOT, but making my share of blunders. In one game , I simply allowed my queen to be taken by a knight. Did not see it.So I agree with you, Yaman, that this many games produces a lower overall standard of play. Not to say that I'm not enjoying it.

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
wow,,, sorry to hear that Dermott

good opinions. after having started this one (my 1st as TD) I really think we need to do one of two things,,

A) have two sections - but not sure how to divide it up,, higher/ lower, or open / lower.

B) play only one color/colour per opponent - what the heck , this is a LEARNING tour. you play enough from both sides.

we'll get some opinions. and I really did not anticipate this problem,, my being new at it. Next time for sure. I'll think it out better.

also,, I did not know it would be this hard just to keep track of the crosstable LOL!

Holy b'jeezus!!

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
While I don't mind playing this many games in addition to the quad series I have going, a total of 53 games currently, I agree less games may be preferred. What I think I would prefer more is tourneys by class or ratings. We ,that is us lesser rated players, understand we don't have a chance against players with a 2000 and above rating and normally I don't seek them out. I'll play them when it's part of a tournament but I think when a tournament gets this big a rating structured set-up would be preferable.

I do appreciate the efforts of Snoop & Gladiator and further appreciate the efforts of the tourney players to keep these tourneys going.

And regardless of what I said above I'll keep playing no matter what the structure. I just mentioned preferences.

thanks tknight

I doubt we could have enough players to do a class MOT,, but, you never know. I suspect you would need a minimum of four in each section, but it is an idea that we can keep in mind.

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread

I feel it is about time for me to remove NathanB from this tournament.

Before I do this, I must make sure NathanB has not started any of his games in this tour.

Is there ANYONE in here currently engaged in a Poisoned Pawn MOT game with NathanB??

Speak now or forver hold your peace !

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
very nice job, power,, three at once :--)

believe it or not, that helps me.

and I might even suggest that in the next such Theme MOT where you play each preson twice, to turn in reults when both games are completed.

but that could lead to troubles if ppl forget,, we'll see.

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
BTW, this type of CORR tournament is somewhat of a learning experience for some, as I am realizing.

I was surprised to see a few in here mention to me that they were glad they found the "Analyze" button, which of course, allows you to freely move the pieces around and try to figure out your best move. I would wonder to myself, then,, "Well, what were you using BEFORE that?"

Across the top of the your display chessboard you will see:

[Make Move]........[Analyze].........[Annotate]

the default is MAKE MOVE.

Obviously on ANY move, you want to try different things and go deeper into lines than your one ply. So if you have not tried this feature,,[Analyze], DO IT! when you are done moving everything around, just click the [Make Move] button and your position is reestablished and you just make your move, as ususal.

the [Annotate] feature I am learning myself and I have used it but not finished the game yet to review my efforts.

I'd love to see a game put up in the MOT thread with annotations in it.
you can add/edit them as you go in your game, and go back in moves to do it (analyze mode) but I do not believe you can add them AFTER the game, unless you are pazuzu, who is good friends with Fen, the computer chess magician

Re: Poisoned Pawn Varitation - Correspondence Theme Tourney, Official Thread
The tournament is almost over, I will be sending out a message to all participants with a status report on how many games they have left.

But I do want to thank all of you for hanging in there - we had NO dropouts and that is good.

and once again, Gladiator is King of the Hill with a perfect score and only two games for him to go.

EDIT: Attention all, just now, Wanna2008 became the first to complete all 30 games! Give it up for Wanna2008!

EDIT2: this just in! on recount, Grevillea has been the 1st to finish for some time, sorry Wanna :--(
