Reply | 31 Aug 2010, 13:22:05   Stronger Vs Weaker Players I dont really gloat if I win a game vs a weaker player. In fact I am usually impressed with a weaker players IDEAS, and think, WOW, how come no one has thought of that before! Anyway, I may need some advice, every now and then, because there is a shortage of players, I will pick on a player and beat them into the ground unmercifully. Every once in a while, they will give me a reality check, and say please pick on someone of your own strength. I will come back and say, Ok, sorry and stop playing that person. What I am wondering is Am I making a mistake beating a player over and over even if they dont voice dissapproval? Like bad manners or something? Or just assume, if they voice no protest, everything is fine.

I've also become aware, of an inverse effect; Ie. Weak opponents, tend to make weak moves {D-U-H?!}, And it encourages, laziness, in my own analysis. Whereupon, on consecutive moves; I'll be known to play something other, than the sharpest refutation; Even to the point of unwittingly, letting them 'off-the-hook'! It's quite possible, that playing Too much '2-minute'-timed chess, will have the same effect, of superficial analysis. That's encouraged, and made necessary, by the ticking limited no. of seconds! I have an unproven theory; That if you were to match a predominant, 2 minute chess game player; With another player, of the same rating-range, who plays mostly 5 minute chess; And assuming, they're of equal ability.. and both, were to play a 'compromise' game time-limit, of 3 and-a-half, minutes; I suspect that the former, 5 minute player, would come out ahead; Most of the time! .. Simply because; Not feeling as habit-constrained, from deeper-analysis, due to their accustomed.. More seconds, to think; This should be, to the normally, 5 minute player's, advantage! -- |
