Reply | 10 Jul 2010, 03:05:58   Investigations... I've stolen the cover of one of my favorite authors, Kaufmann. He was enriched by the ideas of Wittgenstein. I picked up on that and ran with it with Kosko, Feynman, Churchland, Ball, Achzel. (Philosophical) Investigations. His ideas, much like Penrose's ideas are, ultimately, flawed. However, these are the first attempts. Kaufmann was using his 'original idea' of connected components in random graphs to come up with an existence proof of quantum coherence - around 20 years later - on nerve cells, potentially between them - we're stretching the argument here. impossible. not just impossible. unnecessary. the complicated weave of 'entanglement' of quantum particles is fascinating, but not necessary to this problem. There is a beautiful pattern of activity that neurons engage in. The counter argument is that 'well, can we achieve this without neurons?'. my answer is no. the substrate is indeed so complicated that it cannot be downloaded to a machine. ever. |

Also; If you would allow the word 'duplicated' to also serve as a substitute concept, as 'downloaded'; In regarding, the immensity of information exchange, of what human {brain} neurons, are capable of. And if there might one day be, a substitute method and conveyence available, for transmitting comparable amounts of info!?; It occurred to me, that your chosen word, of 'ever'..{as in something not being possible, and-or likely}, strikes me as approaching an absolutist viewpoint; Esp. for an agnostic!, {my sense, 'excuse-moi'; Of what describes your spiritual beliefs}. New discoveries, and adaptations, {as you probably would admit}; Are happening in various fields, {even 'non-scientific'..Ie. archeology}; All the time. And as I recall; It was around 1975{?}, that scientists, for the first time, found lifeforms {eg."tubeworms"}, deep on the ocean floor; That were Not dependent on sunlight, for their existence. - By their own admission; A scientific 'watershed' moment! In a 'nutshell'; Perhaps on that basis.. One should seldom if ever state, with great confidence; That something will not 'ever' happen! Ps. Pardon my attempt at philosophical argumentation; And-or.. giving all appearences, of being a 'contrarian' to your post. -- Don't forget; I started out, by asking you a question. -- |
