Controll the center
Just want to say all the books and teachers tell you to control the center, in the words of bill and ted, after 30,000 games this is totally BOGUS!!!!!!. Instead you push pawns down your opponents throat and win with all his pieces going astray!!! controlling the center allows your opponent to equalize by regrouping. Any comments/??//!!!!

Re: Controll the center
The more serious chessplayers among us, All have their preferred openings; Including those who 'swear' by 'center control,' versus, indirect 'wing' attacks.

When your opponent is 'unknown'; Re. his/her preferences, and strengths & weaknesses; I believe that one should pursue an opening strategy, that you believe in!; As in the {American} football {Texas?} coach, heard before; If illiterate, refrain: 'We're gonna play the horses that brung us.'

Though in a 'match' type {best out of 'X number' of games}, competition; Periodic 'surprises' seem to be in order! -- Perhaps you remember, {or read about}, how the 'E4' Robt. Fischer; Once threw 'Spassky' for a psychological loss; In the 2 or 3 games, {as white}, where he varied from, 1. E4! --

Ps.- Just be sure that if you Do decide to play an opening and/or strategy, that you're Not known for; Try to First be..{at a minimum}, reasonably familar, with your 'experiment'! --

Re: Controll the center
if you are pushing pawns and forcing your opponents pieces to terrible squares .......I would hazard a wild guess that u are controlling the center. The idea behind the mantra is that it leads to more space and better manuverability.

Re: Controll the center
Controlling the center is the best way to get from anyplace on the board to any other place. And to prevent the opposite. Either by occupation or indirectly (Nimzovich) Pawn pushers have no way to hide when their plans go astray. I challenge you to two corr, games. One each color. Bring it on. Show me what you got. Abandon the center. And die.

Hey Light Bulb (10 watt) You are extrapolating from the specific to the general. Try taking a course in logic. Fischer did that for shock value. But he won his challenges in the semi and final pre-championship matches by 6-0 and 6-0 scores and he opened all six of his white games as e4. ("Best by Test"- R. Fischer)

Actually try to get the quote straight before you brand others as illiterate. The quote is "You dance with the girl that brung you."

Your quote would have to read "You ride the horses that brung you."

Hemingway you ain't.

p.s. The coach used brung instead of brought for its illiterative

value.

Re: Controll the center
First, I want to thank everybody who responded to my thread. Next I want to say, Yaman nailed it!!! I say control the center also, but there are only so many chess games you can play, or years of chess play you can play where you STOP saying to yourself, OK, now that I control the center now what????? If I am crazy, then anybody who is below 1500 needs to read yamans responce over and over till somthing clicks. Yaman understood my crazyness. It took a strong player to have the vision to add a necessary refinement that I had in mind about theory which I did not come right out and say. The refinement is this: Once you have controled the center, you have to rearrange your pieces to push them ever forward! You have to control the center to GIVE UP THE CENTER. My advice to anyone under 1500, is to FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD!!! This means you keep doing whatever is necessary to keep pushing pawns FORWARD FORWARD FORWARD!! Its a simple idea and thats what people understand most. Raptor, its sort of like each pawn is a steak, or a burger, or baked stuffed lobster. Your mission is to deliver the food to your opponent! Theory says bring the meal half way up the board and let him fetch if hes hungry. No, no ,no. Youb have to keep pusing the plate to his face. as far as the challenge is concerned, i have to say no because we are both on the same side of the fence.Control the center to give up the center by pushing your troops forward.

I don't think that the analogy-challenged "Barry Manilow" {prof. singer, see below}, could've stated it any better! - That is.. on those rare occassions, when he's in his general's 'thinking-cap' mode. Which reportedly, he did once, at a cocktail party. Whereupon, most of the people seated {70% of them ladies}; Politely excused themselves.--

Re: Controll the center
thanks for your responce vertrator, but when I control the center its like i have to fake it for the rest of the game as far as what to do, or to find things to do. For example, WHY would i want to go from the center to some other place on the board. Instead as I have said, I have found that as Nimzovich said, pawns have a lust to expand and that means they want to move forward. So instead of going anywhere, what i would do is like maneuver bishops and nights so that a square that a pawn wants to expand to, can be made more accessible. And if I control the center, where am I going if I want to go somwhere else, and WHY do I want to get there??? Yaman can you help us here, are these significant questions and do they have any answer???? Any help is appreciated!

Re: Controll the center
Trying to 'divine-the-Truth' from A. Nimzovich' chess axioms, into 'All encompassing' {as it were}, chess principles; Including, as you formed your question 'NC'; Is {as I see it}.. akin to trying to solve an algebra equation, by writing an essay about the equation; With No numbers and pertinent, math symbols, allowed!

In so many words; In any number of positions, that one encounters, in especially; What I'll call the 'early middlegame'; Experience has shown me, that oftentimes; There is, No One 'Right' way, to procede!
- And the proof of that; Is the handful or more of sub-variations, of each 'main line' chess opening; That according to the leading opening tomes; All lead to essential 'equality'!; Or put more concisely.. and what you've no doubt seen in chess {opening} manuals; It would be the
'equals sign' {=}. -- -D-U-H?!
