The Pentagon remains the grand-daddy of them all. It contracted to buy 2,852 F-35 aircraft for $197 billion in October 2001. It will wind up with 2,443 F-35s for between $278 billion and $329 billion. From Reuters: “Defense Secretary Robert Gates fired the Pentagon’s F-35 program manager in February. He also added 13 months and $2.8 billion to the development phase plus four more test aircraft.” Conservatives have to address reining in military spending along with social services spending. |
