What is a cult?
I have very little time to reply, so you'll likely get quite far if you answer this question.

Re: What is a cult?
..What is a dictionary for?; whether it be 'online,' or an actual book?!

..From the 'school-of-thought,' that sometimes a question is most appropriately answered, by posing another question! ..

Re: What is a cult?
a sect of people with highly held beliefs - usually accompanied by rituals, that are considered taboo or strange by the general society where this sect resides.

examples: Zen-buhdists in america; coptic chritians in egypt,

Re: What is a cult?
So a cult is defined by being abnormal to the society it is in? Following this line of reasoning we could conclude that Chrisitianity is a cult in Muslim lands could we not?

If that is the case, since 7th Day Adventism has been defined as a cult by more than one person on this MISC BB, how does it fit that it would be a cult within America?

Of course we can conclude that christians in a muslim land are a cult. note my: "coptic chritians in egypt"

How is it that 7th day adventists are a cult within america...? well, certainly not because they are christian, but some of their beliefs and the fact that the whole foundation and beginings to the 7th day adventists look very suspicous by founder, smith, makes it seem like a cult to some.

So, for some people, if the foundation is questionable, then the followers are merely going through motions, whther they beleive it or not.

this i just opnion, BTW, "One man's meat is another man's poison" certainly applies to this very subjective situation.

I've heard some accuse William Miller of being the founder of Adventism, though he was actually the founderof the Millerites.

I've heard others say EG White was the founder of Adventism, and in many ways they would be correct.

But who is this Smith person you are referring to?

How does your explanation fit your definition? Seems to me your explanation and definition don't match.

Further, is it possible that other Christian lines have been founded by what some would term shady people in one scope or another? For that matter, since all have sinned which one of us couldn't be defined by someone somewhere as shady?

Re: What is a cult?
yeah, sorry, joseph smitn founded latter day saints.

but just for the exercise, if his finding of the metal plates was - as some now believe, of his own doing and not god's as he claims, than the religion is baseless and his followers are only following HIM and not god, ergo, a cult.

Is that a question, or an opening for a debate?

What do you want it to be? I am sure you have an answer to fit your agenda.

In a movie {attendence} 'drawing-power' sense, "I AM SPARTACUS!," will Always Surpass, the problematical script, of: "I AM SOCRATES!" ..LOL

Re: What is a cult?
Hi Snoop
How does attempting to debunk Mormonism answer my question about 7th Day Adventism?

Is not the purpose of a BB to exchange points of view in the form of a dialog? Would this not be what you and Hmmmm have been doing recently in a post about the codependancy of God?

Hi DS
Does using the form of dialog that was made famous by another make you that person

Hi Hmmm
Are you going to continue hiding behind your lame jokes or explain your accussations against 7th Day Adventism when challenged?

Happy Sabbath

It doesn't.

I mixed the two up (latter day saints & 7th day adventists).

Hi Snoop

Okay, so you've answered the original question about "what is a cult" -- But the question of how 7th Day Adventism fits that model remains unanswered. That is, of course, if everyone agrees with your definition though I've not seen any attempts at countering it as of yet.

Re: What is a cult?
Still wondering if anyone here knows what a cult is? Afterall, people seem to accuse me of such; with that being the case shouldn't they know what their accusations mean before launching into them?

Re: What is a cult?
Perhaps, it's as simple as No One, {or almost no one}, cares to dialog with you, 'IBIJ'; at least for the forseeable future{!?}

This famous prayer though, {see below}, Should assist you.. or most anyone, from getting 'antsy' about Any number of things! {atheists, excepted!}

"God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.".. {Reinhold Niebuhr; 1892-1971}

Re: What is a cult?
Hi Ummm

That would make sense if I didn't have one post with 16 comments and the other over 33. Even if I responded half of those amounts, which is not the case it would still be 8 & 16. Can you demonstrate people staying connected to your posts for that long?

However, according to your answer, anyone that associates with me is part of a cult? I've heard some truly odd things from you in the past, but I'm not sure if this doesn't take the cake. Could it be you yourself have no real idea of what a cult is and thus you keep skirting the issue when challenged?

Cheers
IBIJ

PS: If you have no interest in dialoging with me, why do you keep opening my posts? - LOL
