Reply | 21 Jul 2008, 02:46:29   math and physics problems - 4 questions - feynman lectures on physics prize i will be moving soon and decided to consolidate all my books from my back room before packing them. I have a mint condition 'feynman lectures on physics volume 1' i'd like to give away, owing to the fact i had and tore through volume 1 in high school, and when i wanted volume II i had to buy it as a package with volume I, hence I have an extra. i was considering giving it to one of my nephews for christmas but they are a spoilt bunch and wouldn't appreciate such an offer. value ~ $60. volume I deals nicely with mechanics (work, energy, momentum, frames of reference, wave mechanics, basic statistical mechanics, relativistic mechanics, etc). it's a classic. just so you know, volume II is electricity/magnetism dynamics + some basic quantum theory. value of the note i will scribe inside the front cover ~ priceless :P so i'll be thinking a few interesting problems (4) if anyone would like to take on the challenge. the problems won't require too much advanced math and if required i'll give some background and hints. if you have any questions post them and more details will be given. if anyone would like to sign onto this challenge please let me know in this thread or email me. after a few weeks i'll post the questions. winner gets the feynman lectures. i'll post a picture of it, etc. it's a beauty. give it to your nephews; perhaps it will spawn another genius. |

Don't worry I won't put the questions at a high level and I'll provide all initial data. I hope to make them useful and a bit entertaining---was working on one on the way to work today... |

Reply | 22 Jul 2008, 03:42:19 In reply to DualSpace Re: math and physics problems - 4 questions - feynman lectures on physics prize I did not major in math nor physics, but I'll try. I have a colleague at work who majored in Math in college; perhaps I'll ask her to help. Thanx for the challenge. |

Questions will be hand-written, scanned, and posted as an image, so there will be diagrams and such. Don't panic! Most involve tricks so i'll post and post until you get the answers. HallOfMirrors is a wildcard entry given the geat Toronto mathematician Coxeter would love the irony of the handle name. :P....Hall, you should definitely google coxeter...lol |
