In truth it was a minor battle, but one that had great significance for Canadians, even though a small number of Canadians think its importance in defining Canada is overstated. Australia has its own version of Vimy ridge. It is the battle at Gallipoli, in Turkey in 1915. For the first time, Australian soldiers were not parceled off , here and there, but fought together, albeit still under British command. The campaign however was a disaster. The troops landed in the wrong spot, at the foot of some hills, where they were slaughtered like sitting ducks. Eventually enough troops did get to land, and for the next 8 months, the Turkish and allied forces fought a bloody battle from trenches often only 50 yards apart. Both sides launched attack after attack at the other's trenches. These bayonet charges were futile, most men killed the instant they came out of the trench, or within a few yards. Despite the courage from the Australians [also from the Turks] , after 8 months , the attack was called off. Gallipoli was abandoned. This battle is remembered each year in Australia. Known as Anzac day, it is the most important day of the year [ religious days excluded]. There are parades and ceremonies in even the smallest towns, to honor the sacrifices of the diggers. In recent years, Anzac day has grown in popularity, although this was not always so. While you listen to this song, I hope you will also spare a thought for the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Edited on 22 Dec 2007 at 01:01:11 |
