Melbourne summer ritual
On hot sweaty nights, in houses all across Melbourne, the huntsman spider is preparing to spread fear and panic among the women [ and some men too]. Actually, the huntsman is fairly harmless...it does have a bite and sting but it's not fatal. But it is big, and it's quick. If you listen carefully you can hear the screams. Men are usually designated as the huntsman catcher, using a rolled up newspaper or a plastic carton. Women prefer the long handle broom or the vacuum cleaner. Problem is they are so quick, they can get around the broom head or the vacuum , and run up the handle or hose. This is the leading cause of cardiac arrest in Melbourne. I use a cloth, or a towel for the bigger ones and release them outside. The following video stars a tiny huntsman, which as usual manages to avoid the first attempt at capture.
