Reply | 17 Jan 2009, 00:52:22   YAMAN'S REQUEST- JAN 16TH "ADJUDICATION". adjudications Is it possible to get an ongoing correspondence game adjudicated?I am presently playing a position where I have a dark squared bishop and my king.My opponent has a dark squared bishop, a pawn and his king. My opponent can not move his extra pawn because if he does my dark squared bishop will capture it and the position will thus be drawn. He can't move his King because if he does my king will capture the pawn ergo another draw. So my opponent logically moves the only piece he can-his bishop. So he shuffles his bishop back and forth I shuffle my bishop back and forth and the whole thing is incredibly stupid. Is there a mechanism to request an adjudication? The requirements for forcing a draw without the agreement of both players are very strict for obvious reasons. In general, if one or both players have enough material to win then the game cannot be considered dead. This is true even if it would take one or more mistakes to actually lose. Otherwise subjective judgments would need to be made regarding the skill level of each player, their theoretical knowledge, their propensity for mistakes, etc. However please note that such a game can still be declared a draw if there is a demonstrated lack of progress by either side. The simplest way this happens is generally a three-fold repitition of position. If the same position is reached three times, a draw will be automatically offered and may be accepted by whichever player is then on move. If both players are restricted in terms of viable moves, a repitition should occur shortly and the draw can be declared. If you believe a repitition has occured and was not automatically detected (this can happen sometimes when the repititions are far apart) then please let me know and I will manually check the position. |
