Reply | 22 Jul 2008, 04:59:51   Chess 960, 'Ply-Search' Question{?} Do your '960' chess {variant} online-computers, invaribly play a better game, {with a "deeper" move, 'ply'-search}, the slower, the time-control? ..Also, will your '960' online software become more competent, as later 'generations' of that specific game software, become commercially available{?}.. which, already may be the case, for all I know{!?}; for instance, let's say five years from now, will "Rasputin" be making, noticeably fewer 'bonehead' moves, at '960'? .. |

Brian is on vacation. {Since very few people are in a position to say, "No, he isn't"}. #2. The 'left unsaid,' somewhat disturbing alternative. 'We've decided to 'rest on our laurels; and since we don't see how improving our '960' online-servers, even five years from now.. will improve our "bottom-line," we're happy that our servers are merely able to make legal moves, in All 960 different starting positions.' ..My response: "Without vision, people perish" {Proverbs}; and when corporate vision is lacking, or partially misplaced, they put at risk, {even if that risk doesn't Seem meaningful}, their leadership position among their more visionary 'Web' competitors; even if their now non- existent future competition, appears from 'out-of-the-blue,' at some future point! ..Then again, if you're First waiting to see if the Israeli-Iran {& maybe others} 'standoff', will have literal world-changing, Armegeddon-type consequences, that makes any 'corporate vision' blather, a proverbial 'moot-point'; then you have both my understanding And empathy... even if you never admit to such! .. |

Note that the time control you use to play a computer opponent does not effect its think time. Rasputin is mainly configured so that it will not play above a certain rating. In order to achieve this directive, the computer may make a move that might be considered a blunder. AgentSmith is not limited by rating level, only by the time it takes to think. It is currently at one of the minimal levels of think times, however it will probably not make any major blunders. So the bottom line is if you want a more challenging computer opponent, play AgentSmith. Edited on 23 Jul 2008 at 20:47:22 |

Brian: I can tell from your previous illuminating answer, that you.. or someone above you in the corporate 'pecking-order,' is partial to catering to '960' players who do Not want to have to think 'Too hard,' whenever they're playing '960' versus, "Rasputin" or "AgentSmith." ..Isn't that a decision, that's best left up to each & every player to decide, through player- configurable difficulty levels?! -- In a nutshell, I would think that for more than a few of us, there's Less satisfaction in winning against a computer that's pre-configured by "Caissa's Web" to play a game, that's Less than it's hypothetically capable of playing!! .. |

'Caissa' members: Perhaps I'm that proverbial, "Lone voice in the wilderness"; but it stands to reason that if You do Not care that both "Rasputin" & "AgentSmith" are Both configured to play noticeably below their true capabilities, at "chess-960," {see, admin. Brian's earlier reply/ explanation}, rest assured that the "Caissa's Web" Admin., Won't Care Either! .. There's an old saying, that if you want to improve at a given competitive endeavor, then you'll need to play against stiffer opposition, {or words to that effect}; otherwise, they may as well change "Rasputin"s handle, to "DOfuss"... and perhaps "AgentSmith" minimal move, ply-search configuration, could henceforth be known as the handle, "Halfbaked"! .. |
