Live game moves being dropped
For at least the second time now, I have experienced a dropped move in the new interface. This is when my opponent has made a move but it hasn't shown up on my screen.

When this happens, I have to reload and then go back into the game to get my board up to date. (This assumes that the Caissa server has registered the move and it got lost on the way to my machine; I don't know if it also sometimes happens that the player has sent the move but Caissa hasn't registered it.)

But by the time a minute or three of inactivity prompts a swap of messages to determine that a move has been lost, quite a bit of time has gone from my clock. In the game I just played against otyeko, I had about eight minutes left before the dropped move; when I came back I had only one minute.

My guess is that a momentary outage in one's Internet connection at the wrong time can cause this. But whatever the cause, it could be dealt with if the client, in addition to waiting for the server to send a move, could poll the server at intervals to check that the board is up to date. (How long this interval should be would depend on finding the right balance between improving the reliability and not putting too much load on the server.)

If this happens again, check the connection status settings on the main menu. In the upper right of the main menu (behind the game playing window) there is a Connection Status and Lag time. If you think you are disconnected, confirm what these settings are showing. You may have to drag the game playing windows down and to the left for the connection settings to show up.

Re: Live game moves being dropped
I have just found that the problem is now even worse.

I had about 6 minutes left on my clock. I waited a few minutes for my opponent's move. Then I reloaded and went back into the game. I found myself with only 20 seconds left.

The reason it's now even worse is that, by refreshing the opponent's clock at 30-second intervals rather than second by second, it gives the impression that it is polling the server at these intervals to refresh the clock and check that no move has been dropped. If it isn't polling the server, why does it bother doing this instead of just counting down second by second as it does when it's my turn? Even more importantly, why, after 3½ years, has polling the server to check for dropped moves still not been implemented?

Come on Caissa, sort it out!

Re: Live game moves being dropped
Same thing has happened to me WAYYYYYYY to often, and for well over a year now. With all the money Caissa has made over the years and continues to make with our annual membership fees I suggest they hire someone who knows what the HELL they're doing software wise....I JUST played a game (this is crazy) where my opponent lost his connection and never came back, so after the 5 mins I click on forfeit or whatever it says....Then after doing so my game with my opponent morphs into 2 entirely different people, Host and someone else who I cant recall....Turns out Host wins by forfeit getting my points while he has a game in progress, WIERD VERY WIERD!!! Then I go to game results and the game I just played wasn't even listed. However it was listed as Host and his opponent having played the game that I had just played, and he was still playing his game at the time, strange......

If anyone is aware of other chess sites with decent graphics and minimal glitches please let me know. I've been a member here since
95-96 but i'll gladly switch and give my money to a site who's founders actually CARE about they're MEMBERS and work quickly to resolve software issues!!!

Re: Live game moves being dropped
.. As you no doubt already know 'C.B.'; No chess site is without its 'flaws'; As even 'ChessCube' goes offline, about 3 times a week, averaging I'd say, being unavailable, 2 hrs. each time. Yet, compared to this, {minus No 'bb' to read}; It's kinda 'heavenly'!

Initially, like everyone; You'll be given, a rather brief 'free trial' period; Before you're asked to 'S-H-O-W - M-E - THE -M-O-N-E-Y'! .. Their 'game-graphics' and accessible, personal-game-archive, {for "'VIP' members"}, are superb! {at last 'check'.. I could 'play-over' 'move-by-move'; Any one of my 4,300 plus games!

In any event .. This site is merely 'one-click-away'..{where you may need to 1st 'register'; Enjoy! -- http://www.chesscube.com
