Using Windows Vista Home Premium, IE 7.0, Java and JS enabled.
 
If I try to start a live game, I receive the message stating "You have been paired as Black against AgentSmith." When I press OK, the window displays nothing but the cryptic message
 
Starting game !LCH1179919929000284001105!
 
and never displays the game board, no matter how long I wait.
 
Trying to watch a game fails similarly, stuck on the message
 
Viewing game !LCH1179885101011478000002!
 
Help me please!

What version of Java are you using? You should be able to determine this by going to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Java>About, or the equivalent in Windows Vista. It should look something like this:
 
Version 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_01-b06)

Version 1.6.0-oem (build 1.6.0-oem-b104)

If possible, turn on your "Java Console", try playing a game again, and then copy the contents of the Java console here.
 
To turn on the Java Console, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Java>Advanced>Java Console>Show Java Console.
 
After you play a game, you can access the console in IE7 Tools>Sun Java Console menu.

This last line appears when I log on. Nothing new appears when I try to play or watch a game. Also, there are no messages from IE telling me that anything has been blocked.

We've made a few a changes. Go ahead and try to play another game.

Now most of the interface appears; however, the piece images don't display. Strange - the corr interface works without trouble in this respect. In place of the board is a blank space, with the a..h and 1..8 along the sides and with grey squares showing the last move, but otherwise I cannot see the board at all.
 
The Java console has displayed just one more line:

I shall add that the "Loading images..." progress bar does display immediately after the "You have been paired" screen. Sometimes it disappears immediately without filling at all, and sometimes it nearly reaches the end. But the board still fails to display regardless.

This is NOT acceptable. I suspected it!! I'm on a Macintosh and
 
can not get to my games. -or- anything as far as I can see.

Which browser are you using? Safari, etc.

I too get only the line of text when I try to play a live game. I'm on a PowerPC Mac G5 with OS X 10.4.9 using Safari 2.0.4 and - according to the Apple web site - the lastest possible version of Java (1.0.5_07). When I run your Java test I get lots of green lines but also a red line telling me that I should update my Java version. What can I do?

Try playing a few games in a row. We have experienced problems with the Mac where we get the line of letters and numbers when we first try to play a game, then when we start a second game it works.

what seems to make it work on my Mac (PPC) OS X 10.4.9 is to log in and start a live game which gives me only the text message as mentioned before. Then I log out and log in again ... and then it works.

This was my case for awhile.This was my solution: Went to a place where there is a "hot spot" for wireless connection < and different ISP > Bingo! Everything is smooth! The trouble was my ISP company was not providing the right service. So it could be worth the trouble - at least I eliminated all other possible reasons. Fortunately across the street at my location there is a Hotel/ restaurant with a "hot spot"
