Rf1 1/2-1/2 One of the most fascinating positions I have seen on a chess board. 7...b5 is really a fantastic variation. The game ended in a draw a bit later on but the possibilities are endless for black. (I had played 17...Rb5) |

And 2nd try 14.Qd3 instead next time you're playing this line, as after this continuation I won't give a dime for Black. See: 14.Qd3 gxf6 15.Bxf6 Rg8 16.0-0-0 Rxg2 and now 17.Kb1 Qb7 etc. gives White a decisive advantage. Or 16...Rg5 17.Ne5 etc. No offence:-) |

Reply | 11 Apr 2009, 23:14:26 In reply to geierwally Re: Polu variation If you win any of these games (14 Qd3) and (17 Rf1) I will eat my hat. If you give any of these positions to analyse to a strong program like Fritz or Rybka, it will tend to prefer white. Why? -White has an extra pawn. -White is much better developped. -His king looks safer whereas black king is stuck in the middle of the board. Many pins also against black, the knight d7 can't move and the d8 square is very weak. Despite all these drawbacks I am convinced that black can survive and even create winning chances. -Most of the blck pieces are still on their original squares, but white has a lot of weaknesses because of their risky play. The 2 black bishops will be extremily active sooner rather than later. -The 2 black rooks are hyperactive as well and control 2 important colums, the "A" one leading to the white king and the "G" one , possibly the most important one in the Najdorf in terms of counterchances. -The "awkward" position of the black king is not as bad as we think. This king can seek shelter on both sides of the board. It has got great flexibility. Having said that I think we can say the position after 10...b4 is dinamically balanced but any mistakes from one side should be exploited with an instant win by the other side.I will post some of the games I played soon. I believe that an interesting variation might start at move 20: 20 Rxd7( it is evident that 20...Qxd7 is bad and 20...Re1+ 21 Rxe1 leaves white in a better position), therefore 20...Kxd7 21 Qa4+. Black has two valid options(anything else seems to be weaker) A) 21...Kd8 22 Bxe5 Qxe5 23 Qe8+ when the bishop at f8 falls; B) 21...Kd6 22 Qa6+ Kd7 ( all other moves by black K seem dangerous) 23 Bxe5 Qxe5 24 Qb7+ Ke8 25 Rd1 leads to the capture of the bishop in f8. Indeed, the position is immensely beautiful and rich. Hopping that I do not have too many mistakes, please analyze this observation. All my best, Kastelka |
