New member sign up procedure re-programmed
One of the benefits of going live with the new Caissa is the avalanche of feedback we get from the real-world use of various parts of the new site. Such feedback simply cannot be acquired from beta testing. An example of this is the new member signup procedure. On the new Caissa, we require that visitors enter a valid email address to be able to signup for a new account. A confirmation email is then sent to the address, and after it is acknowledged the new member can logon. This is a standard procedure on many contemporary websites.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the main menu. In analyzing the sign ups we found that a significant number mis-spelled the email address, e.g. "bob@yahoo.co" or "jim@yhoo.com," resulting in a failed sign up. This is just one example of the useful feedback we got from the analysis.

Based on this analysis, we have completely re-programmed the new member signup procedure to make it as "error-proof" and streamlined as possible. Specifically, visitors must now enter their email address twice, the second time being a confirmation (if they are spelled differently, they get an error message). Other improvements include direct access to the main menu after signing up, as well as an option to play a computer game directly from the signup area. Behind-the-scenes, there is a detailed logging system that will allow us to analyze and track new member signups and identify any places where the signup procedure might fail.

Obviously, this is "unglamorous" work that happens mainly behind-the-scenes. Understandably some members interpret this as a lack of progress on the development of the new site and are quite vocal about making their opinions known on the bulletin board. However we are committed to the long-term success of Caissa and are willing to do this type of work to lay the "foundation" for that success.

In the coming weeks you should see more obvious progress in the corr and live game areas.

Re: New member sign up procedure re-programmed
Well, add my name/account to the list of unhappy campers. What a great place it was to play chess and interact in a community. After years of neglect and apathy from MediaWest, admin at large seem to be genuinely surprised that the membership at large have not embraced the new site and renewed administrator involvement. I have been here since early 1997 and when my time is up in mid August I will not renew. I will miss the small remaining cast of old timers.
